Today’s gospel reading was the parable of the unforgiving servant. Short form: Servant owes king billions of dollars. King forgives servant. Servant turns around and demands twenty bucks from fellow servant and refuses to forgive it. King is angry and unforgives servant.
Pastor said “Where is the gospel? Why did Jesus finish on the law? Because at this point, Peter needed to be brought to repentance.”
Maybe. But the gospel is already in the parable: the first servant was forgiven.
I’ve yet to see a Lutheran exegesis of this passage that doesn’t seem to pit Lutheran doctrine against what Jesus actually says. It’s one of the things that bothers me about the branch of the church that, so far as I can tell, gets the most things right.

Ya, “ending on the Law” is not the same as “ending on the Law in such a manner as to make meaningless the Gospel you just preached”. We seem very caught up in form and structure, but shouldn’t you be preaching all the Law and all the Gospel that you can possibly squeeze out of a text?
